What type of instruments were used in the early and late 1950s?
During the birth of rock and roll
Pretty much the same types that are used today. If you look at performances from that era, you’ll find lots of Fender electric guitars (Telecasters were as popular then as they are now), as well as big hollowbodied electric guitars just like the ones you see today. Acoustic guitars were used, as well. Drum kits were a little simpler then, with fewer drums and cymbals, but the essentials — the bass drum, snare, hi-hat and a tom — were all there. And you’d see more upright basses during that era, since lots of players hadn’t yet transitioned to the more portable electric basses.
