What are some good technical jazz bands?
I dont want to just listen to the easy to play jazz music, id like some bands that play very technical stuff, preferably without vocals. But either is fine.
This is an interesting question!
You have some very good suggestions already listed, most notably Frank Zappa (yes, THAT Frank Zappa–one of the most creative composers ever and very technical in his compositions), Steely Dan (Becker and Fagen are the most cerebral writers of the modern rock era), Stan Kenton (classical big-band jazz era), Bella Fleck (un-classify-able!) and Mahavishnu Orchestra (John McLaughlin primary composer/guitarist but a varied supporting cast including Billy Cobham)
There are, however, some glaring omissions:
From the “classical” jazz era you can’t get more technical than Dave Brubeck, especially his experiments with “odd” time signatures. From a more “avant garde” point of view, Don Ellis with his orchestra is the epitome of technical aspiration. But Miles Davis, Bill Evans (Davis’s pianist at a time), John Coltrane, Chic Corea, Oscar Peterson and many others pushed and opened up the technical limits of composing and playing. Flora Purim, a vocalist who worked a lot with Corea’s Return to Forever orchestra, really pushes the technical aspect of vocal music. Also in the vocal area, don’t overlook technical wizards the Ward Swingle Singers (Double Six of Paris), Manhattan Transfer, Bobby McFerrin and Al Jarreau.
