Bebop jazz is a style of jazz that originated in the 40’s. It evolved from “swing”, the popular jazz form of the 30’s played mostly in dance clubs. Bebop upped down the tempo and focused more on individual improvisation based on harmonic progressions instead of a theme or melody. Some of its noticeable characteristics are its “swing” (offbeat rhythms) and a very unrestricted framework (notation was usually limited to tempo, rhythm, and chord progressions, leaving the performer free to improvise much of the piece as he/she saw fit) as opposed to the highly organized structures of the swing/big band era of the previous decade.
