Guide tones in music?

can someone please explain guide tones in music, particularly Jazz, how they are used, what they are and how to use them?

Thank you

Basically, the third and the seventh of a chord. The choice of those two tones define the chord, so your ear fills in the rest harmonically.

As chords move through a progression, those two tones often change position back and forth as you go through the wheel of 4′ths.

If you are aware of that, you can make chord progressions sound smooth as the guide tones produce a nice little melody of their own.
