Muddy Waters: Classic Concerts
$11.46 Anyone who calls the late McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters, the greatest of all bluesmen isn't likely to get a whole lot of argument. what is the difference b/w pop, classic, jazz music?
i dont have much experience with music i just hear what ever i like…….. so i didnt bother to find out the difference in the types of music!
The problem with genres is that they are very ambiguous. Perhaps examples are the best way to demonstrate.
Classical music is typically played by un-amplified string and wind instruments. Although the Classical period was from 1750-1825, the term “Classical” usually refers to other types of music that have a similar sound. (Listen to Motzart, Chopin, Beethoven, Wagner, etc.)
Jazz music is largely based on the blues. A typical jazz characteristic is the stress of beats 2 and 4, unlike most classical and pop music which stresses beats 1 and 3. Jazz is the only musical genre that began in America. (Listen to Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Ella Fitzgerald, etc.)
Popular music usually consists of repetitive chord progressions and melodies. Pop songs usually follow a verse-chorus structure, and the occasional bridge or solo section. (Listen to anything that has ever been played on MTV)
Also keep in mind that all of these genre also have sub genre.
These are very basic answers. For better understanding of the effects of music on the brain (including how we categorize things into genre) I suggest that you check out “This is Your Brain On Music,” a book by Daniel Levitin.
