The Jazz Channel Presents Keiko Matsui (BET on Jazz) The Jazz Channel Presents Keiko Matsui (BET on Jazz)
$5.53

Keiko Matsui may have won a few Smooth Jazz Awards, but the Japanese- born, classically influenced keyboardist's music is not jazz--at least not if your definition of jazz includes swinging, the blues, and improvisation, all of which are in relatively short supply in this nearly 90-minute performance (plus DVD bonus features, including an interview with the artist). Not that it matters, really. Wh...

Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song (Harvard East Asian Monographs) Tears of Longing: Nostalgia and the Nation in Japanese Popular Song (Harvard East Asian Monographs)
$17.65

To older members of the Japanese public, who constitute enka's primary audience, this music--of parted lovers, long unseen rural hometowns, and self-sacrificing mothers--evokes a direct connection to the traditional roots of "Japaneseness." Overlooked in this emotional invocation of the past, h...

Japanese Jazz Classics?

I’m trying to find some classic Japanese Jazz music. I know that jazz has a big history in Japan, but it’s really hard to track down actual artists and song titles.

Pretty much, I’m looking for the Japanese Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday.

Thanks!

You MUST listen to Hiromi Uehara. She’s AMAZING!! I wouldn’t exactly call it “Japanese” jazz, because that’s not exactly a genre, but she’s a more modern piano player who happens to be Japanese. Sorry, can’t help you with singers.
