The Triplets of Belleville
$6.49 Words cannot capture the delights of The Triplets of Belleville, an astonishing animated movie from the mind of French director Sylvain Chomet. In fact, there are only a few spoken sentences in the entire film; most of the soundtrack is a mix of squeaks, barks, and the jazzy music of Benoit Charest. A bicyclist is kidnapped from the Tour de France by mysterious gangsters; his grandmother travels t... |

Jazz - A Film by Ken Burns [VHS]
$37.87 Accompanied by a menagerie of products, Ken Burns's expansive 10-episode paean, Jazz, completes his trilogy on American culture, following The Civil War and Baseball. Spanning more than 19 hours, Jazz is, of course, about a lot more than what many have called America's classical music--especially in episodes 1 through 7. It's here that Burns unearths precious visual images of jazz musicians and ha... |

Alexander's Ragtime Band [VHS]
$3.95 The jaunty rhythms of Irving Berlin drive Alexander's Ragtime Band, an epic musical from 1938 that follows the up-and-down romance of a young bandleader (Tyrone Power, Witness for the Prosecution) and the singer he loves (Alice Faye, Tin Pan Alley) over decades. Their journey from a San Francisco honky-tonk to mass popularity is marked by classic songs like "Oh How I Hate to Get Up in the Mor... |

Love Jones
$6.13 Boy meets girl, and boy loses girl--no more and no less than that--in this romantic story of young, upwardly mobile African Americans navigating through Chicago club culture to the perilous shores of a relationship. The film was surprisingly popular at a couple of key film festivals in 1997, but there isn't anything particularly noteworthy about it aside from its rare emphasis on a love affair bet... |
How could an english teacher use Jazz chants in the classroom?
Jazz chant is a poem that use jazz rhythms to illustrate the natural stress and intonation patterns of conversational American English. Jazz Chants provide an innovative and exciting way to improve your student’s speaking and listening comprehension skills while reinforcing the language structures of everyday situation.
Additional question:
What other ideas can you think for chants?
I love to see core subject teachers using music in the classroom!
Here are some of my suggestions:
-Have them write one and offer extra credit for those who are willing to perform it
-Pair them off into groups and have the groups perform a chant they’ve written or found
-Perform a chant as a class
-An extra credit idea – have them create a rhythmic pattern to accompany a jazz chant on an instrument or anything capable of producing a rhythm (banging on a desk, trash can, chalk board, borrowing drumsticks from the music teacher, borrowing auxiliary percussion from the music teacher, etc) to emphasize the rhythmic patterns in the poem (great way to see how well they understand the speech pattern) . Kids could do this as a group or solo effort.
-Have them write a poem and see if another person can perform it / read it well (great comprehensive activity)
-Have them search YouTube or Dailymotion.com to find an example of jazz chants, send you a link, and give a short explanation of the meaning of the chant or the biography of the performer (if applicable). Have them explain why they like the chant, and if your class has the necessary technology, play it for them. See if they can clap to the pulse of the chant.
-Students could research the biography of performers who use jazz chants and give a short presentation (more of an extra credit activity)
I hope that gives you some ideas! I would encourage you to talk to your school’s music teacher for any possible ideas or resources – I know I LOVED it when my colleagues asked for collaboration in their lessons (I am a music teacher).
