The choice of instruments for jazz depends on the genre of jazz and the preferences of the group leader. Almost every instrument group is represented in some form of jazz. Remember, besides the “traditional” small-group jazz ensembles, there are full-band swing jazz, Dixieland jazz, and progressive jazz. Here are some examples: Keyboards – piano, electronic keyboards, Hammond Organ. (Not usual are harpsichord, accordion, and pipe organ.) Strings – double bass, electric bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, banjo. (Not usual are the bowed strings, mandolin, and ukelele.) Brass – trumpet, cornet, trombone, tuba/Sousaphone. (Not usual are French horn, bugle, Bb horn.) Woodwinds – clarinet, saxophone, flute. (Not usual are oboe, bassoon, piccolo, recorder, panflute.)
